Short Course & Professional Development

This short course will enable you to extend your scope of practice to include the use of injection therapy. This course is designed to enable you to develop an understanding of the key competencies relating to injection therapy including clinical knowledge, decision-making, pharmacology and the evidence base.

This module has been designed in collaboration with NHS and specialist practitioners.

24 hours over a 6-month period

Part A

On campus delivery topics

  • Clinical knowledge: functional and surface anatomy
  • Clinical decision-making: principles of assessment and diagnosis and evidence based
  • Principles of pharmacology
  • Practical application of injections for peripheral lesions
  • Risks and benefits of injection therapy
  • Communication, record keeping and medico-legal requirements.

Part B

Anatomy Lab

This will be a visit to an anatomy lab to practice needling technique on cadavers, as well as developing problem-solving skills.

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate refined knowledge and understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy
  2. Critically evaluate the need for intervention with injection therapy, demonstrating clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills
  3. Discuss the contraindications for injection therapy
  4. Demonstrate and justify safe and effective aseptic techniques in the application of injection therapy
